Australians should be able to enjoy sport and entertainment in environments that are safe and free from harm caused by alcohol. Commercial free-to-air television continues to play a significant role in the lives of Australians, and in shaping community norms and behaviours. More than half of Australian adults are watching broadcast television each week, according to the latest data from ACMA.
In March 2026, the NT Legislative Assembly referred the Liquor Legislation Amendment Bill 2026 to the NT Legislative Scrutiny Committee for a rushed inquiry, seeking submissions within just one week. In the Bill, the NT Government did not give sufficient regard to the right to health, or to the ‘consultation’ process on the Bill. The Bill would likely contribute to preventable harm in the Northern Territory community.
In October 2025, the Australian Government launched an inquiry into the relationship between domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV) and suicide. The Terms of Reference were broad, covering at-risk groups, prevalence, reporting, prevention, legal, health, mental health and other services. However, there was no mention of investigating the role that alcohol plays in DFSV and suicide.
The ACT Government has been updating its Drug Strategy Action Plan 2022-2026 to replace the now-concluded 2018-21 Drug Strategy Action Plan. The Action Plan outlines the ACT Government’s priorities to address harms from alcohol, tobacco and other drugs over the next four years.
The Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System recommended that the Victorian Government develop a suicide prevention and response strategy to better prevent and respond to suicide. The Mental Health and Wellbeing Division in the Victorian Department of Health provided a Discussion Paper for stakeholders to respond to.
The rise of the #MeToo movement has shone a spotlight on the prevalence of sexual harassment, bullying and other inappropriate and unacceptable behaviours within workplaces across the country, leading to a range of inquiries at federal and state levels. Alcohol is a risk factor for these types of behaviours, acknowledged in several recent government reviews.Â
The ACT Government invited written submissions to its 2022-23 Budget Consultation to consider the ACT Wellbeing Framework. FARE lodged a submission ‘Preventing the Criminalisation of People with FASD’ that addresses all 12 domains of the ACT Wellbeing Framework.

Australians are exposed to advertisements telling them to drink alcohol in a range of settings. Research consistently shows that exposure to advertising for alcoholic products is associated with initiation of alcohol use, and use of higher amounts of alcohol by young people.

More than 1,000 people in Queensland die each year of alcohol-attributable disease and injury, and more than 30,000 Queensland hospitalisations are attributable to alcohol. Cancers were responsible for the largest proportion of alcohol-attributable deaths, and neuropsychiatric conditions accounted for largest proportion of all alcohol-attributable hospitalisations.
