South Australia needs effective, evidence-informed regulatory controls to address and reduce harms from alcohol. However, the laws that exist to keep people safe and protect them from harm have not kept pace with the way that alcoholic products are marketed, sold and delivered.
Violence involving alcohol increases at the time of football grand finals and the State of Origin. The link is so strong that the Rapid Review of Prevention Approaches for family and domestic violence recommended that “alcohol advertising be restricted during sporting events”.

More than 1,000 people in Queensland die each year of alcohol-attributable disease and injury, and more than 30,000 Queensland hospitalisations are attributable to alcohol. Cancers were responsible for the largest proportion of alcohol-attributable deaths, and neuropsychiatric conditions accounted for largest proportion of all alcohol-attributable hospitalisations.

The Justice Legislation (COVID-19 Emergency Response – Permanency) Amendment Bill 2021 (COVID-19 Permanency Bill) makes permanent certain aspects of the temporary laws made in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency.
The Victorian criminal justice system has experienced significantly increased prison populations, costs and recidivism. The criminalisation of alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems is a contributing factor in these increases.
FARE has provided feedback on a World Health Organization (WHO) discussion paper on the development of an Implementation roadmap 2023–2030 for the Global action plan for the prevention and control of NCDs 2013–2030.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently sought feedback on the first draft of their WHO Action plan to reduce alcohol harm 2022-2030 to support the Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol.
Loneliness and social isolation have been associated with an increased risk of such mental health problems as anxiety and depression, which often co-occur with AOD problems.
The ACT Government is the first Australian jurisdiction to commit to raising the Minimum Age of Criminal Responsibility (MACR)
