Inquiry Into The Relationship Between Domestic, Family And Sexual Violence and Suicide

In October 2025, the Australian Government launched an inquiry into the relationship between domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV) and suicide. The Terms of Reference were broad, covering at-risk groups, prevalence, reporting, prevention, legal, health, mental health and other services. However, there was no mention of investigating the role that alcohol plays in DFSV and suicide.

Tasmanian Liquor Licensing Reforms

In November 2025, the Tasmanian Government announced a consultation on reforming the Liquor Licensing Act 1990. Tasmania needs effective regulatory controls to address and reduce harms from alcohol. However, the laws that exist to keep people safe and protect them from harm have not kept pace with the way that alcoholic products are marketed, sold and delivered.

Commonwealth Government COVID-19 Response Inquiry

In 2023, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced an independent inquiry into Australia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. FARE made a submission to the inquiry, noting that COVID-19 has had lasting impacts on the ways that alcohol is sold and marketed and the resulting harms. Action is needed to ensure that common sense measures are introduced to help reduce and prevent alcohol harm.

Alcohol-induced deaths in Australia

In 2022, 1,742 people in Australia died of an alcohol-induced death, such as chronic conditions like liver cirrhosis or acute conditions such as alcohol poisoning. Alcohol-induced deaths were recorded at a rate of 6 deaths for every 100,000 people living in Australia – the highest rate reported in 10 years.

If you didn’t hear about this, it’s not surprising, because these findings did not spark a national discussion or result in governments leaping to action to understand and reverse these trends.
