On Tuesday night, the Northern Territory Government pushed through its bill to repeal the Minimum Unit Price (floor price) on alcohol – news that is bitterly disappointing.
We recognise this is a step backwards.
But, there is a clear path forward to influencing change.
More than 200 individuals, community, health, research and Aboriginal-controlled organisations united last year to call upon the new NT Government to commit to common-sense, evidence-based measures that reduce the harms caused by alcohol.
We will continue to work alongside these individuals and organisations to develop a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to alcohol harm prevention in the NT, to improve the health and wellbeing of all Territorians.
Our past statements on the alcohol floor price:
- February 11: Urgent call to NT Government: Do not abandon alcohol harm reduction measures
- November 28: Urgent call for NT Government to retain floor price on alcohol to prioritise health and safety of Territorians
- October 17: Community leaders call on NT Government to keep alcohol harm reduction measures in place
