Pharmacotherapy involves the use of medication in the treatment of problematic drug dependence. This form of drug therapy is very useful in addictions to substances such as heroin, alcohol, and other drugs that affect the body in a predominately biological manner.
The aim of this pilot study is to contribute substantially to the current repertoire of research tools used to understand motivational models of alcohol use. In order to do this, the study developed and validated an innovative, youth friendly sampling tool using mobile phones; as well as addressing the reliability and validity of the monitoring program in assessing mood, motivational factors, place and social context of drinking.
The aim of this project was to develop and test a suitable standard tool ‘the Australian Alcohol Treatment Outcome Measure’ (AATOM) to measure the outcome of alcohol treatment to serve the needs of health professionals and their clients, policy makers, funding bodies, and the research community.
Naltrexone is considered one of the two most effective pharmacotherapies for treating alcohol problems. Its use is still limited in Australia and the effectiveness of alcohol interventions could be enhanced by increased Naltrexone prescription. One factor leading to this under-utilisation may be lack of confidence in the effectiveness of the drug.
In 2004, the foundation granted funding for the Setting Positive Challenges for New Directions project, a collaborative community effort to enhance the quality of services of four key agencies whose primary roles and functions were to support and assist people who suffer from alcohol and substance abuse in Mount Isa, Queensland.
This research makes a significant contribution by examining the factors unique to the AOD sector in Australia, as well as the factors that influence the effectiveness of supervision. This study explores pertinent issues in clinical supervision that particular to an AOD context.
There is widespread concern that the AOD sector faces significant difficulties in recruiting and retaining qualified staff to keep pace with the increasing demand for treatment services. This project examines the relationship between work practices and other factors that impact on job satisfaction, reward, burnout, recruitment, retention, and turnover of frontline AOD workers.
In conjunction with the Centre for Adolescent Health, the National Drug Research Institute and the Social Development Research Group (Seattle, USA), the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute undertook a critical analysis of four existing data sets focused on adolescent and young adult alcohol use and abuse: the Victorian Adolescent Health Cohort Study; the Gatehouse Project; the Victorian Adolescent Health and Well-being Survey; and the International Youth Development Study.
This study complements the limited body of knowledge available in Australia on the impact of alcohol and licit-substance abuse in police and emergency services as well as available treatment and support services. The study researched and documented models of treatment and rehabilitation services for police and other emergency services personnel with an identified alcohol or licit drug problem. The project reviewed the provision of support services for this group, looking particularly at critical incident debriefing, and the issue of self-medication.
This project aims to facilitate the participation of a large group of consumers from all over Australia (including remote and rural areas) to learn to self-regulate their alcohol consumption and manage their co-occurring depression/anxiety.
