The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) has today announced the appointment of Andrew Fairley as Chairman.

The FARE Board is delighted to welcome Mr Fairley as Chairman. Mr Fairley, a commercial and equity lawyer with DLA Piper, brings to the role a wealth of experience in business, governance and philanthropy.

Mr Fairley is currently Chairman of Parks Victoria, Chairman of Equipsuper, one of Australia’s leading industry super funds, and Chairman of the Sir Andrew Fairley Foundation, a grant-making philanthropic foundation operating in Shepparton.

Mr Fairley, who became Chairman of FARE on 1 July 2013, said he was honoured to accept the role with Australia’s leading alcohol research and education organisation.

“Alcohol misuse remains one of the greatest public health challenges facing Australia today, and as a nation we pay an enormous toll. As the new Chair of the Foundation I am committed to ensuring FARE remains at the forefront of alcohol research, public policy development and education in Australia,” Mr Fairley said.

Outgoing Chair, Cheryl Bart, who was appointed to the FARE Board in 2001 and served as Chair from March 2010, retired from the FARE Board on 30 June 2013. Commenting on his appointment Mr Fairley praised Ms Bart for her long service to the Foundation.

“Since 2001 FARE has played a leading role in the promotion of the responsible and safe consumpton of alcohol. I would like to recognise Ms Bart for her valuable contribution to the Foundation in that time, both as Chair since 2010, and in her 12 years as one of the organisation’s founding Directors,” Mr Fairley said.
