A review is now underway to consider the effectiveness of laws which regulate the sale of alcohol in order to reduce violence and other harms in Sydney CBD and across New South Wales (NSW). The Hon Ian Callinan AC will lead the review, which will examine measures including the 1:30am lockouts, 3am cessation of alcohol sales in licensed venues, and state-wide 10pm restriction on takeaway liquor sales.
There is no doubt the measures have been highly successful in reducing harms, and increasing public safety and amenity.
The independent review now presents an important opportunity to highlight the considerable benefits of such initiatives in combatting the scourge of alcohol-related violence and individual harms.
Submissions to the review are due by Monday 4 April, with a report expected to be delivered to the NSW Government in August.
It is vital that the input into the review process is broadly representative of the views of the people of NSW. FARE will be providing a submission to this review, and we invite and encourage letters of support from proponents of such measures to combat alcohol-fuelled violence.
