Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Assistant Minister for Health, Meegan Fitzharris MLA, will officially launch the Game Changer+ media literacy program in Canberra on Friday 29 July.

Game Changer+ aims to increase the ability of high school students to think critically about alcohol advertising messages. The program provides a range of information and resources to teach students media literacy skills so they can interpret and challenge unhealthy advertising.

Game Changer+ is an initiative of the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE), and is based upon a successful New South Wales pilot program developed by a collaborative team of researchers from the Centre for Health and Social Research (CHaSR) at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne.

Lead researcher Professor Sandra Jones, Director of CHaSR, will release her findings and speak on why now, more than ever, it is important to have programs such as Game Changer+. In particular, Professor Jones will discuss how these programs can be effective as ‘counter marketing’ interventions to provide a positive influence in increasing young people’s awareness on the nature of the advertising industry.

Game Changer+ is supported by the ACT Government under the ACT Health Promotion Grants Program.
